BERNIE GRAHAM BA MSc FRSM FRSPH MBPsS
Bernie Graham, Psychologist and Director of MHS, has worked in the Mental Health field for over 30 years. He has extensive experience of supporting people with ‘severe and enduring’ mental health problems and managing support teams. Staff training has been an intrinsic aspect of his work throughout his career. Bernie is a member of the British Psychological Society and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Medicine.
In 2006 Bernie launched MENTAL HEALTH SUPPORT TRAINING & CONSULTANCY LIMITED (MHS) in order to focus on delivering Mental Health First Aid and general Mental Health Awareness training to as wide an audience as possible. He also provides training programmes in stress management and mental health, support staff and carer self care, assertiveness and animal assisted interventions (AAI). With his wide experience and expertise, Bernie can offer bespoke courses and is available to work as a consultant to organisations, offering support and guidance. Bernie works independently, as well as in association with Simon Weston CBE and National Mind. He is also a former member of the National Training Team for Mental Health First Aid England.
MENTAL HEALTH FIRST AID (MHFA)
The Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) course was originally developed in the Department of Psychiatry at the Australian National University to address the general lack of awareness and understanding of mental health problems. Bernie was instrumental in adapting the original Australian version to meet the needs of an English audience which was then re-developed under license for delivery in England by MHFA England CIC.
CLIENTS & COURSES
Since founding MHS, Bernie has established a broad client base in the public, private and voluntary sectors. These include the Home Office, Regional Police and Prisons Services, the Crown Prosecution Service, the Department for Work & Pensions, and the Housing and Communities Agency. He is currently delivering bi-annual mental health awareness training to the consular staff of the Foreign & Commonwealth Office and in 2016 delivered training through the British High Commissions in Jamaica and Mauritius to the local Constabulary & Prison Services.
Bernie’s other clients include National Mind, Shelter, The Prince’s Trust, The Royal British Legion, Lend Lease, ISS, MITIE, KPMG, the Professional Footballers’ Association, and the Universities of Bath, Hertfordshire and Westminster, demonstrating his ability to provide top quality training tailored to the individual needs of diverse organisations.
